Activities in Yangshuo

Introduction

Yangshuo has a great reputation for being THE place to come and get active in China. Yangshuo has been popular with backpackers since China opened up to tourists at the end of the 70's and, as such, has a well developed tourist infrastructue.

The list of activities in Yangshuo below is not exhaustive but does cover the most popular for people passing through. If you want to know about the possibility of taking part in other activities, then just drop us an email.

Whatever you choose to do, you can be sure that the gorgeous scenery will add to the experience. Don't forget to take your time and enjoy it.

Cycling

There are many good mountain bikes for rent. Typically these will cost 30 yuan per day or less. They come with a lock and an optional basket. Tandem bikes are available as are child bikes. Helmets are not, so you may want to bring your own. Cycling can be as easy as a couple of hours along quiet roads to more interesting and challenging routes through the countryside. Whatever you choose, you can be sure we'll make it informative and fun.

Hiking

Going on foot opens up a new range of options to enjoy the spectacular scenery. We can help you select a suitable route, and to plan any transportation needed.

Rock climbing

Rock climbing in China is still in its infancy - but Yangshuo offers some of the best climbing and, hence, leads the way. There are over 200 bolted routes locally - and many more going up all the time. Whether you are a beginner wanting to try, or a serious climber already, you will find great opportunities all around. We can put you in touch with local operators who have the knowledge and quipment to make sure you have safe as well as enjoyable day.

Boat trips on the Li River

There are three real options here:

  • The full, official Li River Cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo;
  • Shorter trips from Yangti, Xingping or Fuli; and the new option
  • Powered Bamboo Rafts from Yangshuo

Kayaking

Kayaking is a great alternative to the other boat options - which all use motors for propulsion. Paddle yourself down the Li River from Fuili to either Liugong or, for a longer trip, beyond that to Puyi.

Life jackets are provided as is transport to/from the start/end points. Larger groups attract a free guide.

Bamboo rafting

Relax and enjoy a slower pace to life with a ride down the Yulong River (a tributary of the main Li River) on a bamboo raft. Lifejackets are provided and should be worn. We often combine this with a cycle ride - arranging for your bikes to go separately.

Get a totally different perspective on the gorgeous scenery. Take an early morning or evening flight for a bird's eye view and an unforgettable experience.

Driftage

For something a bit different, try drifting down the Long Jing River. Get in a two-person raft and wait for the water to be released from the dam (usually at 3 fixed times each day). You are then propelled downriver for over an hour, white-water rafting ... without the paddles. Great fun!
